How to Use Attars: A Beginner's Guide

What Is an Attar?

Attars (also called ittar) are natural perfume oils distilled from flowers, herbs, spices, or wood. Unlike alcohol-based perfumes, attars are oil-based — which means they sit close to the skin, develop slowly, and last for hours without projecting aggressively.

How to Apply Attar

A little goes a long way. Here's how to get the most out of your attar:

  • Apply to pulse points — wrists, inner elbows, behind the ears, and the base of the throat. These warm spots help the scent bloom naturally.
  • Use the stopper or a fingertip — dab gently rather than rubbing. Rubbing breaks down the fragrance molecules and shortens the scent's life.
  • Start with 2–3 drops — attars are concentrated. You can always add more, but you can't take it back.
  • Layer on moisturised skin — apply right after a shower or over an unscented lotion. Hydrated skin holds fragrance longer.

When to Wear Attar

Attars suit every occasion — from daily wear to special events. Lighter florals and citrus-forward attars work well in the morning or at the office. Deeper oud, musk, and resin-based attars are ideal for evenings or cooler weather.

How to Store Your Attar

Keep your attar away from direct sunlight and heat. A cool, dark drawer or cabinet is ideal. Always close the bottle tightly after use to prevent oxidation.
